I played with custom background colors, and I didn’t like how it played with the softly changing functionality I have currently, so I abandoned it.

I submitted the current version for review, and as promised I’ve uploaded all the code:

Quick Update: Memory Haze was rejected (for copyright infringement and a silly mistake). I don’t plan on trying to work around this and resubmitted, but I will leave the source code up for anyone to play with. Thanks!
