Spammers

Why are these people trying to use these forums for their SEO crap? All of the links are nofollow so they are just wasting their time. And if it is a bot, it needs to be rewritten to check the links after the first post at the very least. I can understand spamming on a forum that is related to the link being posted since the members may actually click the link, but I doubt anyone here will give them traffic, lol.

I myself have done crap like this in the past for other companies, but nowadays I just go to fiverr.com and pay the $5 for 10k or more back links.

Just a thought here, how about adding a captcha for starting a new discussion (could also do the same for replying even though that’d be a pain in the butt)? If the bot isn’t programmed to check for a captcha at that point, then it will cut down on the spam. They will still get through the account creation though since most every bot checks for captchas at that point.

Edit: Could also add a timer to how often you can start a new discussion. The latest spammer did 4 discussions within 3 minutes, so with something as simple as a 5 minute timer, it would have cut out 3 of the spam discussions.

I say add some more forum mods. Get some of the older codea guys that lurk here. Jvm, ignatz, andrew to name a few. I like @Slashin8r 's idea of a timer. However I’m not a fan of Capatchas, I always mess them up :frowning:

Why not check the member name in the post against the list of valid members. If they’re not in the list, don’t allow them to post. Don’t allow new members in the list until they’ve been verified.

Bortels and I are already forum mods with the power to delete posts and discussions, but we can’t block users. We delete spam when we encounter it, so it can be useful to link to spam posts here in case we miss some.

Having scanned further down, I see what you’re referring to. I’ve deleted the discussions but Simeon will have to delete the user.

@Andrew_Stacey I’ve given you (and other moderators) the ability to delete users. Please feel free to use it on spammers, when you come across them.

I’ve noticed about four recent posts where a new joiner posts two lines like this:

Something nice
Check out my website: link

Seems a little suspicious

I’ve just deleted two such, and have deleted a few over the last few days. Do link them here to make it easy for moderators to find.

@Andrew_Stacey, my bad I forgot to link them but I see that you got the ones I noticed.

Whoops one more just pooped up:

Twolivesleft98 spamming like crazy

I think it’s a specific person doing it, keeps talking about Nike trainers… Can’t IP addresses be banned?

I’ve deleted twolivesleft98 and their posts.

more spammers

A few more:

Why not restrict to post only to people who really bought the App (Codea)? A kind of serial or something, just to allow them to add to the discussion. (Just an idea. Sorry for my english).

Good idea quezadav, I’d go with that.

Again:

@quezadav If we do that then people who wish to buy the app and have questions about it won’t have any place to ask.
