Follow-up: we opened Codea again after leaving it for an hour and we are out of the loop. Whew! But if anyone could post the real way to escape, we would still love to know.

To kill Codea (force shut down) on iOS 7, you double-press the home button or drag up with four fingers, then you should see the Codea screen but smaller with the Codea icon below it. Drag the Codea screen up and press on the home screen to the far left (you can scroll by dragging horizontally) or press the home button to return to the default home screen.
