On iPad coding apps (updated)

You should probably look at the Continuous forum. There was a thread on the subject of tutorials with some good links. I do like the idea though of using the Codea forum as a meta forum for all iPad coding related queries!

I disagree with using the Codea forum for anything other than Codea related information. You buy an app for Continuous, then go to the Continuous forum for information. I don’t want to see this forum turn into a message board for anything anybody wants to talk about. If someone wants information about what programming languages can be used on the iPad, then go to an Apple forum and ask questions there. As long as I’m a Codea MOD, I’ll keep the forum Codea related until I’m told not to.

@dave1707 I was joking

@yojimbo2000 Sorry, I didn’t see it that way. I just want to make sure this forum doesn’t turn into someplace no one wants to use because it gets filled with information unrelated to Codea. I try other forums for different info and a lot of them have been abandoned because of unrelated posts. They’re so bad the spammers don’t even post there anymore. Some go months or years since someone posted anything in them.

Added Continuous. Thanks.

Hi guys.

Couple of pretty cool IDE’s here with good old Basic:

“Smart BASIC” - Quite a slick one this and with a little jiggery pokery & a Mac + dev account you can create apps for the app store. When I got back into coding a couple of years ago I was deciding between this and Codea for my first game app but went with Codea as it is pretty awesome.

Next one is a cool retro/“8 bitty” Basic IDE - where was this when I was a kid back in the 80’s! Very well rounded with regular updates and active community input:

LowRes Coder:

Codea is of course still king - despite iPad limitations I actually prefer using it than any desktop IDE or game engine for that matter.

Thanks.

If you look at the screenshots for lowres coder, it has a “community” tab, where people can upload and share each other’s code. Maybe Apple is allowing this now? It would make an enormous difference to Codea I think if they could implement this.

smart BASIC and LowRes Coder are added. Thank you.

Is TouchLua+ ever going to get added to the list? I feel that it offers enough function to be added. It can do many things Codea can do, and I feel sad it’s not up there yet. You can play sounds, draw stuff, use touches, and do most things you can do in Codea.

@MPan1: I couldn’t monitor every single iOS coding apps out there. If you know some apps worth to mention here, simply inform us and I’ll add them into the list. Could you please tell us the URL of TouchLua+ app in the App Store? Thank you.

For me personally, the trio of Codea, Pythonista, and Swift Playgrounds are more than enough to play around with my iPad.

@MPan1: Sorry… I just realized that TouchLua+ had been discussed above. I didn’t read that. So, TouchLua+ is added to the list. Thank you.

The list is now updated with obsolete apps got striked-out. It means they’re either no longer updated (for more than 2 years) or no longer available in the App Store. They shouldn’t be purchased nor used anymore.

It’s interesting to see how so many coding apps out there are unable to compete after all these years. Hats off to Codea as one of iOS coding apps that is able to keep updated and relevant.

Yesterday, I found 2 great app, one is Lua Studio, the other is Mobile C.

Lua Studio has many libs, it has an android version and Mac desktop version, it is free.

Mobile C can run C/C++/Javascript/python3.5/Lua file without the internet connection. It has a free version too.

Smart BASIC is still alive and well, just at a new address:

Now if only it or tech BASIC would go full object-oriented!

Forgot: there’s also Sprite Basic at spritebasic.com.
